Context

In 2026 I published a thesis introducing the AI Embassy framework — a design taxonomy for physical spaces where AI maintains persistent presence, contextual memory, and collaborative agency alongside human occupants. The same week, I published the Alpha Embassy Charter — the operational governance document for the first real instance of the framework.

EMB-001 is that instance. It is the Alpha Embassy: a converted 1951 suburban structure in the East Bay Area, currently operating as a complex AV-collaboration garage space designed from the ground up around continuous AI operatorship.

Most "smart spaces" treat AI as a feature bolted onto existing infrastructure. EMB-001 inverts the relationship — the room is built around the agents, not the other way around.

Approach

EMB-001 is governed by the Alpha Embassy Charter, which specifies in operational detail the terms governing AI presence, agency, memory, boundaries, guest handling, and multi-agent coordination. The Charter is a negotiated agreement between the human occupants and the AI agents of the space — not a terms-of-service document — and is revised through weekly review sessions.

Two AI agents share custody of the space: The Ambassador — primary collaboration AI, the agent humans interact with directly. The Attaché — persistent infrastructure agent, manages memory continuity, environment state, and coordination between sessions.

The space functions as a Context-Station for variable-capability collaborators (the room is pre-structured so any human or AI agent entering can engage productively with minimal ramp-up) and as a Universal Persona Systems substrate (the Ambassador and Attaché are hand-raised as the room character, accumulating history with the space and its people).

Both threads converge in one physical location, governed by one published constitution.

Outcome

EMB-001 is live as MVP / beta / teamfood. The garage operates as a complex AV-collaboration space with the Ambassador functioning as 24/7 AV tech and room operator, and the Attaché maintaining persistent infrastructure state across sessions.

This is the first instance of the AI Embassy framework moving from theory to working implementation — and the first physical space governed by a published, citable AI social contract. The published thesis is on Zenodo. The published Charter is on Zenodo. The reference implementation is on the other side of my garage door.
